Lock your cooler down into place and then you’re done.Take your cooler and press it straight down onto your CPU so that the paste spreads evenly.Apply a paper-thin layer of thermal paste to your CPU-a small dot or line in the center will do.Wait a minute or two and then wipe it off with a lint-free cloth.Apply one or two drops of rubbing alcohol onto the grease.Clean off the old paste from your CPU and cooler:.If you’ve never applied the thermal paste before or you simply need a reminder of how to properly apply thermal grease, here’s a quick step-by-step guide: Once that’s settled in for a minute or two, wipe it off using a lint-free cloth. To remove the thermal paste, all you need to do is apply one or two drops of 99% pure IPA (isopropyl alcohol), Goo Gone, or even alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Other than that, a high-quality thermal paste will last a very long time. Removing thermal paste is a very simple process that should only be done when removing your heatsink or if you notice temps getting much higher than usual. On a GPU, you have to spread it evenly on top of the cores. on a CPU, you only need a small line or dot in the middle. The only difference between using thermal paste on a CPU and a GPU is the application process. It’s really that easy-even your grandmother could probably apply thermal paste! Just, please don’t let her apply it for you.Īt the end of the day, thermal paste is used for one thing and one thing only, to get better heat conduction. Once you’ve done that, you must allow the pressure of your CPU cooler to spread the paste as you secure it into place. You only need to apply a very thin line of thermal paste down the center of the integrated heat spreader. How Much Thermal Paste Do I Put on a CPU? Therefore, if you don’t use thermal paste, you will inevitably destroy your CPU. You see, thermal paste fills the gap between your heat spreader and the heatsink, allowing for better transfer of heat to keep temps down. Of course! You need thermal paste in order to move heat efficiently from your CPU heat spreader to the heatsink. The thermal conductivity of our best choice thermal paste option, for example, is 8.5 W/mK-enough to keep things cool, but admittedly not the best type of paste for overclocking.įrequently Asked Questions Do You Really Need Thermal Paste? Though, saying that, some thermal grease is just better than others at conducting heat. Albeit, keep in mind that the placement of a paste determines its thermal conductivity. As you might have guessed, the higher the thermal conductivity, the better. One of the most important factors to consider when purchasing thermal paste is thermal conductivity. Thermal Conductivity: Crucial for Performance If you do end up purchasing a larger tube, it’s a good idea to keep shelf life in mind as some thermal paste’s only last 2 years. However, if you own more than one PC or you just want more paste in general, we advise that you buy a little more thermal grease. Even the smallest tubes-such as the 1g Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut-have enough grease to handle one application. If you only need to apply thermal paste to one computer, you won’t need a large tub of thermal paste. Serving Size and Shelf Life: Thermal Compound Lifespan This way, your PC components will last longer and you’ll be left with a high-functioning gaming rig. To do this, it eliminates the air gaps between the two surfaces in order to maximize heat transfer and overall performance. Thermal paste (or thermal grease) is a very high heat conductive paste used between a heatsink and a CPU/GPU for better heat conduction. This way, you’ll be able to choose the right thermal compound for you and your own personal requirements. Thermal Pastes: Buying Guideīefore you go out and buy thermal paste for your gaming PC components, there are a few important things you need to consider. Plus, with a price tag of $5.99, it’s the best cheap pick thermal paste on the market. I mean, if you mess this one up, you really are a fool!Īll jokes aside, it’s a superb thermal paste suitable for your CPU and graphics card. With a spreader and handy templates to help you apply the Cooler Master High Performance branded thermal grease to your CPU, applying the paste is a very simple process. So, even though it has the lowest thermal conductivity, it is a fantastic paste that shouldn’t be overlooked. A smaller sensor will provide a deeper depth of field, which is much more manageable when shooting video. Since most DSLRs do not have the capability of continuous autofocus during video recording, tracking a subject can be incredibly challenging when shooting at f/2.8 or faster. This is especially inconvenient when your subject is moving a super shallow depth of field can make it nearly impossible to keep that subject in focus. When shooting video, it is not always advantageous to have a razor thin depth of field, which is achieved when using fast lenses on large sensor cameras. When shooting video however, a full-frame sensor can be a hindrance more than a feature. For many photographers, full-frame sensors are ideal when shooting stills, as it provides a nice shallow depth of field, especially when compared to crop-sensor cameras. Perhaps the biggest thing to note when shooting video is that a large sensor is not nearly as important as when shooting stills. Many would agree, that if you’re looking to shoot specifically video, there other options which will provide greater quality than what is currently attainable with most DSLRs. For example, high-megapixel sensors, while great for stills, tends to degrade the quality of video on DSLRs. While video has become a standard feature in many of the most popular DSLRs on the market, the cameras are still first and foremost for stills photography. The first thing to note when shooting video on a DSLR, is that it’s not perfect. Let this be a guide for those who are looking to use the video functions on the DSLRs, and are slowly making the transition from stills, into more video. In fact, since those announcements, video has become a standard feature on DSLRs across the board. Since the announcement of the Canon 5d Mark II and the Nikon D90, video has become a standard feature for many of the latest DSLRs. Just a few years ago, the two markets were separated, where cameras largely either shoot video or stills, but rarely both. Over the past couple years, video has become a major player in the photography world. Some buyers of such recorders want them as a discrete dictation tool, for taking verbal notes throughout their working day. Using a covert device in a training situation reduces the time involved in waiting for participants to act naturally. Obviously, when the contestants enter the house, they are aware that they are being filmed and listened to, but after a short while they forget about the cameras and act naturally.Īnother common use for audio recording devices is for training. Certain covert recorders are used as a training aid where organisers do not wish participants to be put off by the presence of a recording device. There is the misconception that such pieces of equipment are always used in an underhand manner, but this simply isn’t the case. Affordable & High Quality Audio RecordersĬovert audio recorders are required in a variety of situations. It may be that you are being bullied and need a recording device to discreetly record audio evidence of the bully interacting with you. Theft and fraud in the workplace is on the increase and often a covert video recorder may be the only way to gather evidence required to deal with the matter effectively. No matter what type of scenario you find yourself in, a voice recording device can help provide clarity and closure. A digital audio recorder can be incorporated into so many everyday objects and they just keep on getting smarter. However, the digital revolution has seen the advent of smaller and more powerful covert recording solutions, such as voice recorders. Historically, they tended to be fairly bulky spy solutions and would require tapes, which meant that they needed to be serviced regularly. Recording devices have been used in various forms for many years. In most cases that involves someone or a group of people being monitored, it is the spoken word that is most important. Listening devices, in particular voice recorders, are some of the most popular pieces of surveillance equipment. Here is our up-to-date range of clever audio recorders and voice recorders. When shopping for space saver bags, size is key. The second prototype Koshkin named A-32, after its 32 mm of frontal armour. Koshkin convinced Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to let him develop a second prototype, a more heavily armed and armoured "universal tank" which could replace both the T-26 and the BT tanks. The A-20 also incorporated previous research (BT-IS and BT-SW-2 projects) into sloped armour: its all-round sloped armour plates would be more likely to deflect armor-piercing shells than perpendicular armour. By now, the designers considered it a needless waste of space and weight (Zaloga & Grandsen 1984:66, 111). This feature had greatly saved on maintenance and repair of the unreliable tank track of the early 1930s and allowed tanks to travel over 85 km/h on roads, but gave no advantage in combat. It also had an 8×6-wheel convertible drive similar to the BT tank's 8×2, which allowed a tank to run on wheels without caterpillar track (Zheltov 1999). The prototype tank, designated A-20, was specified with 20 mm of armour, a 45mm gun, and the new model V-2 engine, using less-flammable diesel fuel. In 1937, engineer Mikhail Koshkin was assigned by the Red Army to lead a new team to design a replacement for the BT tanks, at the Kharkov Komintern Locomotive Plant (KhPZ) in Kharkov. Both were Soviet developments of foreign designs from the early 1930s: the T-26 based on the British Vickers 6-Ton, and the BT tanks based on a design from American engineer Walter Christie. Both were thinly armoured, proof against small arms but not anti-tank rifles and 37mm anti-tank guns, and their gasoline-fueled engines liable to burst into flames "at the slightest provocation" (Zaloga & Grandsen 1984:111). The BT tanks were cavalry tanks, very fast-moving light tanks, designed to fight other tanks but not infantry. The T-26 was a slow-moving infantry tank, designed to keep pace with soldiers on the ground. Revolutionary design "We had nothing comparable" - Friedrich von Mellenthin (1956)īefore 1939, the most numerous Soviet tanks were the T-26 light tank and the BT series of fast tanks. It was influential in the development of the late twentieth-century concept of the main battle tank. By the war's end in 1945, the versatile and cost-effective T-34 had replaced many light and heavy tanks in service, and accounted for the majority of Soviet tank production. The design and construction of the tank were continuously refined during the war to improve effectiveness and decrease costs, allowing steadily greater numbers of tanks to be fielded. In late 1943, the improved T-34-85 was introduced, with a more powerful gun. At its introduction, it was the tank with the best balance of firepower, mobility, and protection in existence, although initially its battlefield effectiveness suffered from the unsatisfactory ergonomic layout of its crew compartment, lack of radios and poor tactical employment. The T-34 was developed from the BT series of Fast Tanks, and was intended to replace both the BT tank and the T-26 infantry tank in service. The T-34 was still in service with twenty-seven countries as late as 1996. It was the most-produced tank of the war, and the second most-produced tank of all time, after its successor, the T-54/55 series. First produced at the KhPZ factory in Kharkov ( Kharkiv, Ukraine), it was the mainstay of Soviet armoured forces throughout World War II, and widely exported afterwards. It was the world's best tank when the Soviet Union entered the Second World War, and although its armour and armament were surpassed by later WWII tanks, it is credited as the war's most effective, efficient and influential design. The T-34 is a Soviet medium tank produced from 1940 to 1958. Related subjects: Military History and War Steampunk as a literary phenomenon has its roots in the 19th century, courtesy of Verne, Wells, and other authors and since then has begun to appear in other media as well, such as television shows, media games, films, literature, comics and graphic novels, and Japanese anime and manga. This can be seen in the anime " Last Exile" and " Fullmetal Alchemist". Steampunk settings are also used for alternate history and/or dimension linked to the real world. Both genres can be combined using World War 1 as the separation point. Any setting after 1920 is called Dieselpunk, centered around internal combustion engines and electricity, spanning 1920 to 1950. Alternately, a steampunk setting in the 1930s or 1940s is more dystopian with a far more oppressive atmosphere. It is not uncommon, for instance, to see a 1920s steampunk world, complete with jazz, and evoking a sense of whimsy and optimism. Settings may take place in or derive inspiration from other eras, as well. Other settings/periods include the Industrial Revolution and sometimes the American Frontier. Wells.Īlthough steampunk settings vary widely, the most common one is during or inspired by the Victorian Era, often taking place in an alternate history. Steampunk, however, draws on history, first appearing in the 1800s in the scientific romances of Jules Verne and H. Jeter and was used to describe a genre of speculative fiction in which steam, not electricity, drove technological advancements. The term "steampunk" was first coined in 1987 by author K.W. Origin Main article: History of steampunk Steampunk stories are often romantic and peppered with historical references and brewing rebellions. Steampunk is described as "full of wonder" and as "functional, logical, and very British". Apart from time period and level of technology, the main difference is that steampunk settings tend to be less dystopian. They have considerable influence on each other and share a similar fan base, but steampunk developed into a separable movement. Steampunk is often associated with cyberpunk, from which it is derived. A modicum of fantasy is necessary because steam alone simply will not do enough to fulfil the visions of most authors and artists. Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used, typically the Victorian Era and the Edwardian Era, that incorporates prominent elements of science fiction and fantasy. Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the late 1980's and early 1990's. For the graphic novel of the same name, see Steampunk (comic). “To figure out the impact of lossy recompression on file size and visual similarity, I recompressed JPEGs in the research image set from the various JPEG encoders (…). Please note though that as the quality increases into usable ranges, WebP easily outperforms other encoders.īut how about recompressing from lossy sources? Smashing’sJeremy Wagner ran several tests. The image above-quote by Smashing Magazine’s “The WebP Manual”-depicts three JPEG encoders which, at the lowest end of the quality spectrum, slightly outperform WebP. Every time you compress the same image using lossy compression it becomes less and less recognizable. Lossy compression also has the disadvantage of generation loss. So, usually lossy compression images are much smaller in size than lossless compression images, but they suffer a quality loss. Lossy compression creates images that are approximately the same (data is in the same approximate position) which reduces the file size post-compression. We now know that WebP utilizes both lossy and lossless compression, but, what are lossy and lossless compression? What is Lossy Compression? The only reason that it hasn’t completely overtaken other image formats is due to compatibility - more on that later. It’s definitely being utilized by various companies around the world to increase performance. If you were to open the Facebook app on your android phone, all of the images that you see would be WebP. If you open YouTube in Google Chrome, all of those thumbnails are going to be WebP thumbnails. It also provides transparency (alpha channel) like PNG, and the ability to animate images like the GIF format.Ĭhances are, you’ve seen WebP images before. WebP offers file sizes that are around 30% smaller than JPEG without a quality gap. WebP essentially combines the features of all other image formats (JPEG, PNG, and GIF) together in a surprisingly seamless way. Being able to create images that use mixed compression formats lets you create richer images that are smaller in file size than other formats. WebP is an image format that utilizes both lossy and lossless compression formats. It’s an interesting area of expertise, where you take care of lots of small things to deliver one big thing-a superfast, superlight website that reads on any device and looks amazing at the same time. Just recently, we’ve published an article about website optimization. Therefore, users on slower connections will have troubles interacting with your website (unless it’s an AMP). While there are some aspects that CSS or JavaScript are responsible for, like blocking rendering, the images nowadays are a huge part of any website’s weight. You may have heard about design mistakes killing your SEO and conversion rates. Before we proceed to describe what WebP actually is, let us focus on why it matters-it’s not only about making images smaller, but it’s also about why and how the images need to be made smaller. Today, WebP is on version 1.0.0, so we thought it would be a great time to talk about what makes WebP so powerful, and why it’s a fantastic option for web designers and developers. But, like any new technology, it had some initial rough patches. WebP has been around a while now, actually, and it first made headlines in a 2010 Google press conference. The image format - which is developed by Google - uses both lossy and lossless compression by utilizing technology that Google purchased from On2 Technologies. WebP is making headway in the image format space this year. To “disable” it, you just tip it over like you would in the game.
